General Notes: Known to his Braxton County relatives as "Wellington". In 1850 he lived with Alexander and Margaret Lively. In 1860 he lived with his grandparents, Bartlett and Elizabeth. After Civil War he married Elizabeth Bragg and had 2 children before he moved to Kanawha Co., where he settled in the Davis Creek area. About 1869 he bought 40 acres of land from James Clark on the Mud River Fork of Davis Creek, a tributary of Kanawha River, for $200.00. He engaged in farming before he moved to what is now the community of Spring Hill, a suburb of South Charleston, WV, about 1879. On December 16,1879, he bought from Caroline E. Thomas a tract of 13 3/8 acres where the town of Spring Hill is now located. He engaged in the mercantile business and had a store on the Kanawha and James River Turnpike east of the intersection of that road with Chesnut Street in Spring Hill. His residence was on the Turnpike near his store. John D. Sutton, in his "History of Braxton County and Central West Virginia," relates the story about a boy named Fox who was playing in the water near the mouth of Birch River, where some folks were washing clothes, when a large pike caught him by the leg and would have drowned him had he not been rescued. The boy's uncle, Samuel Fox, killed the fish which was 51 inches in length. This same boy, Arthur Wellington Fox, was shot and badly crippled by a man named Harrison Beasley. Beasley was undoubtedly a member of a band of bushwhackers or home guards who harassed the citizens of the county who sympathized with the South during the Civil war. Samuel Fox, Wellington's uncle, at the time of his death, had a tin box filled with confederate currency.
