General Notes: Known as "John Francis Meadows" or "Frank" at times.

Francis Meadows II was born in 1754. Most records are vague on this date and rely on statements given in deposition before various Virginia judicial bodies. In this case we are relying on family legend. "Virginia, At a Court of Quarter Session held for the County of Monroe the 15th day of August 1820 - On This 15th day of August 1820 personally appeared in Open Court being a Court of Record for said County Francis Meadows aged "about 66 years" & Resident in the said County, who being first duly sworn according to Law doth on his oath declare that he served in the revolutionary war . . . ." SOURCE: The foregoing document was transcribed verbatim from a photocopy from microfilm obtained at the National Archives in July of 1999. The document was one of a number of documents following a cover sheet for service in Virginia by Francis Meadows or Medows (the alternatives are expressly set forth on the cover sheet) and Frances (set forth below, as if to identify the wife of Francis Meadows), File Number W 5367.

In the early days of our country, the designation "Jr." was most frequently used in tax records or legal documents to distinguish a son from his father, and then only when both men were of legal or contracting age. It is therefore highly significant that Francis Meadows II of Rockingham County, Virginia was twice identified as "Jr." in records where he could have been confused with his father.

In a 1787 personal property tax list for Rockingham County, Virginia, two men named Francis Meadows are identified in the tax District of Reubin Moore, Commissioner. One of the two is identified as Francis Meadows Jr., a designation that is most usually used to distinguish a father from his adult son. The list identified (1) Francis Meadows, over 21 years of age, who had two white males above 16 and under 21 in his household, and who also had one horse and two head of cattle. The list also identified (2) Francis Meadows, Jr., over 21 years of age, who had one horse and three head of cattle. In a 1788 Militia Vouchers List, Francis Meadows II is again designated as "Jr." to distinguish him from his father. "VOUCHERS IN THE SEVERAL MILITIA COMPANIES OF ROCKINGHAM COUNTY IN 1788 . . . CAPTAIN JOHN PETERSES COMPANY, No. 16. . . . Francis Meadows, 1 tithable, 1 horse; Francis Meadows, Jr., 1 tithable, 2 horses." SOURCE: John W. Israel and Barbara Meadows W8451 On the 22nd of September 1818, in Estill County, Kentucky, Israel Meadows, aged 62 years, appeared and made oath: That he is a resident of Estill County, Kentucky, that he was enlisted for 2 years at Sweet Springs, Virginia, in July 1776, by one James McNutt and served in the company commanded by Major Arbuckle of the 12th or 13th regiment of the Virginia Line of the Continental Establishment. That he continued to serve in said corps till August 1778 when he was honorably discharged from the service at Point Pleasant, Virginia. That he was discharged after being in the service for 2 years and 3 months. On that same date, Alexander Reed made oath: That he was a soldier of the Revolutionary War and served in the company with the within applicant, for about 18 months and knows that said Meadows did serve for that period in the company and regiment as stated. In Clark County, Kentucky, on the 23rd of October, 1820, Israel Meadows, aged 65 years, resident of Estill County, made oath: that he served on the Revolutionary War as private in Captain Arbuckle's company of General Harris's brigade of the Virginia Line. That in lieu of his orginial declaration of September 22, 1818, he received a pension certificated dated May 12, 1819.

In Estill County, Kentucky, on the 5th of October 1838, before Aaron McMonigle, Justice of the Peace, Barbara Meadows, widow of Israel Meadows deceased, made oath that she is the widow of Israel Meadows, dec., who was a private in the Revolutionary War. That she is satisfied he was in the army previous to their marriage, and that after the army, he was again in service for several months. He was stationed, after their marriage, at Point Pleasant on the Kentucky (?) River. That she has always understood that she was born in the year of General Braddock's defeat, on Easter Day, in 1775 and to the best of her recollection she was married at the age of 23, going on 24 years old and on the 8th day of July. At the time of her marriage, she and her husband resided in Greenbrier County, but there being no parson near, she recollects that they went over Peter's Mountain and married on the east side, at the house of one Henry Smith. Her first child was born the next spring after her marriage and if living would be 60 years of age next spring. She had 10 children by her deceased husband, but has no record of their ages except a mutilated one from which she can tell that her 7th child was born in November 1792 and her 10th child and last one, was born on the 18th day of July 1799. That after her marriage, she and her husband continued to reside in Greenbrier County, Virginia till the year or two after the birth of the youngest child. They then moved to Madison County, Kentucky where they resided a few years before they moved to Estill County, Kentucky, where her husband died 11 years since in September, and where she has ever since continued to reside.

Israel Meadows of Estill County, Kentucky, who was a private in the Virginia Regiment for 2 years was inscribed on the Roll of Kentucky, to commence on September 22, 1818. Certificate of the pension was issued May 12, 1814. Zachariah Phillips, of Estill County, Kentucky, made oath on October 5, 1838, that: He was born in 1763 and first became acquainted with Israel Meadows aforesaid about 50 years ago in Greenbrier County, Virginia. That he and his wife Barbara Meadows were then married. That when he first became acquainted with them, they had several children. That he married their daughter, Nanny, who fifty years ago was only 8 or 10 years age and from what he has always understood from his wife, she would, if living, be 60 years old next spring. He thinks the place of marriage of Barbara and Israel Meadows is what at that time was known as Botetourt County, Virginia. Said Zachariah Phillips appeard before Aaron McMonigh and made affidavit to the truthfulness of the above statements. Samuel Kelly, Sr., aged near 73, made oath, that he has known Israel Meadows, deceased and his wife, Barbara, between 55 and 60 years. That they then lived in Greenbrier County, Virginia.

Mrs. Elizabeth Cole, aged 52, made oath on the 26th day of July, 1839, that she is the daughter of Israel Meadows, deceased, and his surviving widow. That her father, said Israel Meadows died September 30, 1827. That her father, many years previous to his death had a family Dutch Bible, which Bible got wet some previous to his death and was all destroyed except a small part which is a very much mutilated but contains enough to see the age of the seventh child, Jacob Meadows was born November 8, 1791 or 92 The deponent is quite confident that it is in the handwriting of her brother, Jacob Meadows, now a resident of Indiana. Her oldest sister, if living, would now be about 60 years of age. Her oldest brother, Wm. Meadows, is now 58 years old. Said Bible Records were in the possession of her brother for many years previous to his death and has been in her mother's possession ever since. The lief containing the record of her brother Jacob's age, she thinks, will make a good part in her deposition of this day.

Also on the same record, there was part of a record which read: Rebecakah Meadows was born -- Isabella Howard, aged 84, resident of Montgomery County, Kentucky, made affidavit to be used in favor of Barbara Meadows, that she was acquainted with Israel Meadows, deceased, and Barbara, his widow, before their marriage and ever since. The deponent lived in Burntrides (?) Fort in Greenbrier County, Virginia, with said Barbara before and at the time of said Barbara and Israel's marriage. This marriage took place as early as the year 1776. That they were married previous to said Israel Meadows enlistment as a regular soldier, under Captain Arbuckle, whose company belonged to Colonel Lewis's regiment. Henry Howard, to whom this deponent was married in 1779, belonged to the same regiment as said Israel and Barbara, and lived near the Fort where said Israel performed service as above recited. Gordon Griffin, aged 85, resident of Bath County, Kentucky, made oath that: He was well acquainted with Israel Meadows, deceased, and Barbara, his wife, before they were married as aforesaid in Greenbrier County, Virginia, and though the deponent was not at the wedding, he was in the neighborhood when it took place. That said Israel Meadows marched with said Captain Arbuckle down to the Point in Virginia and there continued till his term of enlistment had expired and while stationed at the Point, his wife made clothing and sent him by a brother of the deponent, whose name is William Griffen and who belonged to the same regiment and deponent thinks the same company in which Israel Meadows belonged. Barbara Meadows, who was a widow of Israel Meadows, was inscribed on the Roll of the Kentucky Agency, for her pension to begin on March 4, 1836.

Certificate of the pension was issued 6th of November, 1839.

Israel married Barbara Green [15177] [MRIN: 5049], daughter of Garrett Green [15361] and Elizabeth Turpin [15362], on 8 Jul 1778 in Botetourt County, Virginia. Barbara was born on 30 Mar 1755 in Virginia and died in Aug 1845 in Estill County, Kentucky at age 90.

General Notes: In Estill County, Kentucky on the 5th of October 1838 before Aaron McMonigle, Justice of the Peace, Barbara Meadows, widow of Israel Meadows deceased, made an oath that she is the widow of Israel Meadows who was a private in the Revolutionary War; that she is satisfied he was in the army previous to their marriage and that after the army he was again in service for several months; that he was stationed at Point Pleasant on the Kentucky River; that she has always understood that she was born in the year of General Braddock's defeat on Easter Day in 1775 and to the best of her recollection she married at age 23, going on 24 years old and on the 8th day of July, at the time of their marriage, she and her husband resided in Greenbrier County, but there being no parson near, she recollects that they went over to Peter's Mountain and married on the east side, at the house of one Henry Smith; her first child was born the next spring after her marriage and if living would be 60 years of age next spring. She had 10 children by her deceased husband but has no record of their ages - except a mutilated one from which she can tell was her 7th child and was born November 1792 and her 10th child, and last one, was born on the 18th day of July 1799; that after her marriage, she and her husband continued to reside in Greenbrier County, Virginia until the year or two after her birth of her youngest child. They then moved to Madison County, Kentucky where her husband died 11 years since in September and where she has ever since continued to reside.

General Notes: The Josiah Meadows who came from Mercer County, Virginia was an American Soldier having served for two or more periods; a part of the time on the frontier against the Indians, and another part in the American Army against the British. The facts here stated are taken from his declaration made for pension in 1832, when he was seventy-four years of age. He enlisted in the early spring of 1778 under Captain Joseph Renfroe, and marched with his company to Jarrett's Fort on Wolf Creek, now in the County of Monroe, where the company was divided, and part thereof, he among them, was sent to Keeney's Fort on the Greenbrier where he was stationed at the time of the attack made by the Indians on Donnally's Fort. Upon the expiration of the term for which he enlisted he again entered the service in the company of Captain Isaac Taylor and with his company and regiment, the latter commanded by Colonel John Montgomery, marched through the Holstein country to the Indian town at Chicamauga which was destroyed; from thence going to the Illinois country under Colonel George Rogers Clark. After his return he was with a portion of the American Army that had charge at Yorktown. Mr. Meadows was a Baptist minister in the last years of his life; locating on the north of the Bluestone, and among his sons were Josiah and John Meadows. From this Josiah Meadows, the soldier, has descended the large family of that name in Mercer and adjoining counties. After locating in Bluestone, he married Juda (Judith) Lilly daughter of Robert Lilly who settled there ten years earlier. (Pension Cert #2123)

General Notes: Excerpt from the Beckley Herald Centennial Edition, August 1950.

"The forefathers of the many Raleigh County Meadows were truly Mountain Men, some of them being west of the Alleghany Mountains ridges for closer to two hundred years than one hundred. The first known to own land in what is now Raleigh County was William Meadows Sr. He signed his name "Meddows, as did the first Jeremiah Meadows living in Raleigh, according to the clerk of early Greenbrier County in 1796 and Giles County, Virginia in 1818. This is noted as to not confuse these Meadows with a Jeremiah Meadows or Meador who came to this region in 1832.

William Meddows Sr. was deeded land in the amount of 150 acres below the mouth of Madam's Creek on 28 April 1818 from the survey of June 1795 and again in 1815, which was granted Alexander Stuart and Archibald Stuart. This land contained half the briery bottom along New River and was bordered on the survey line of the corner of Peter Davis, who married Susanna Meadows January 7, 1799 in Greenbrier County.

William Sr. and Sarah, his wife, of Giles County, deeded this land to John Meadows and Elizabeth in about 1826, and they in turn deed the land to Jeremiah by 1836. Here he lived with his wife, Nancy Roach until 1843 when he died."

ARIES MEADOWS
Now isn't this interesting? Peter Davis, who married Susannah Meadows in 1799, assigned a Land Office Treasury Warrant to Aries Meadows. Aries used the warrant to secure 50 acres of land on two runs of the Greenbrier River in 1801. A transcript of the land grant follows my signature line.

So far as I know, this is the first direct tie that has been discovered between Aries and a member of the family of Francis Meadows I. This fits well with our assumption that Aries and Susannah were brother and sister.

John Peters, who gives his affidavit of the service performed by Jacob Meadows, shows that he saw him at Yorktown serving as a soldier. Jacob Meadows settled on lower East River and is the ancestor of the Meadows family in that vicinity.
