General Notes: Estill County, Kentucky, May 17, 1830, Zachariah Phillips aged 67 appeared in court in Estill County and made this oath: "That he enlisted for one year in April 1781; that he joined the company of Captain Thomas Donahue on June 1st, 1781; that he enlisted in North Carolina, on the Continental establishment; that he continued to serve in said corps until the 1st of June 1872 when he was discharged from service in South Carolina near Bacon's Bridge, but did not receive a certificate of discharge until he arrived in Salisbury, North Carolina; that his certificate was signed by Colonel Murphy on whom the command of the said Donahue in the command of the company; that about February 1822 he removed with his family from Monroe County, Virginia to Scott County, Virginia and from Scott County to Estill County, Kentucky in the summer of 1825 and has continued to reside in Estill County ever since; that his wife is dead and his children have all left him since they married or have turned out for themselves; that he has usually followed farming as a means of livelihood and has usually made gun handles now and then; that his children being able to take care of themselves are of no charge to him; that from his advanced age he is unable to procure a comfortable livelihood by the pursuit of any occupation; that none of his family lives with him' that his youngest child, a son is 17 years old."

There is much speculation about the parents of Susannah Meadows. Some have placed her as a daughter of William Salon Meadows, others as the last born to Josiah Francis Meadows and Mary Kesiah Bell. We finally decided to compile all of the information we had on file (and could find at the time) and see where it led us. We found this:
1. An original document dated 2 January 1799 whereby William Meadows seeks a license for the marriage of Peter Davis and Susannah Meadows, his daughter.
2. An original document granting a license for marriage of Peter Davis to Susannah Meadows dated 5 January 1799.
3. Witnesses to the request for a license of marriage were Jonathan Roach and John Stuart, whose families were know associates of William Meadows. Beckley Herald August 1950 and 1810 census.
