Mary Ella Davis, daughter of Lucinda Williams and William Davis, married Henry Harrison Harper in 1881.

Affectionately known as "Aunt Ellie" or "Ma Harper", Mary Ella Harper created a home that was known throughout this section for its hospitality, welcoming smiles, and Christian fellowship. Many tributes could be written to the tall blonde queenly woman, mother of nine children and friend of anyone who was sick or in need, but the one word synonymous with "Ma Harper" was faith - an unfaltering, shining faith that expressed itself in prayers so potent that people sought her from all parts of the state.

Always a light sleeper, "Ma Harper" spent many of the hours after midnight studying and reading her Bible.

With her large baskets filled with luscious custards, yellow pound cake, fried chicken and fat potato salad balls, Ma Harper was always a popular guest at the church dinners of the old Mt. Tabor Church. It was she who prepared the wine and bread each time the Sacrament was served in the Harper Methodist Church, and it was she who entertained the itinerant preachers and their families.

With all her towering physical and spiritual strength, Ma Harper was first and always a woman. While she seldom gave a thought to herself, she like pretty clothes for special occasions, and was always bitterly annoyed because her hands were not delicately made. Her hands were exceptionally large, strong and gentle. In the sick room, no touch was as soothing or successful in banishing pain. General Notes: Edward Green Canterbury was a farmer when he married Claudia May Lively in 1896. Later, while living at Dunloup, he worked as a carpenter building bridges for the railroad. In 1905 he purchased several tracts of land from the Paintsville Land Development Corporation of Mount Hope on the west side of the railroad in Paintsville (named Pax at a later date) and built a house in 1909.

In 1913 Ed and brother in law, Otis Lively, purchased a tract on the east side of the railroad adjacent to his house. On March 19, 1919 he sold his house and the west side tracts to Barbara Hunter for two thousand dollars and acquires the Otis half interest in the eastside tract. There he built a new house and a commercial building that included a general store, apartments, lodge, hall, movie theatre and barbershop. The theatre had a player piano used during silent film showings.

He escaped to Oregon from the sheriff. The incident leading to his escape involved a very nearsighted preacher who assumed that Walt, or one of Walt's friends, slipped a button into the collection plate. The preacher then proceeded to direct a "hellfire and damnation" sermon at Walt and his friends. Not taking kindly to his sermon, they waited outside the church. It was at night and proceeded to throw the preacher into Paint Creek at Lively West Virginia.

The Preacher reported this to the sheriff who "quote went looking for Walt."

There are numerous stories about Walt. To me he was always friendly, smiling, a great story teller, and a fanatic fisherman. His wife Pearl was the sweetest woman I have known.

"What seems to have been a thoroughly unprovoked murder, occurred in the Hatfield Saloon, Herberton, on the evening of election day."

"Lawson Davis was shot three times and killed by his cousin, William Davis. Both were young men. Lawson was about 23 years old and William about 21."

"The cause of the shooting was a trifling quarrel over family matters. William Davis and his father were in the saloon, and both had been drinking. When Lawson came in he was invited to take a drink and called for a bottle of beer. A remark was made about Lawson Davis' father, who is dead. To the remark Lawson made a reply that he did not want anybody to throw off on his dead father, whereupon William Davis fired three shots, all of them taking effect on Lawson's right breast. He sank to the floor and in a few minutes was dead."

"William Davis did not take time to remove his pistol from his pocket, but fire it while in his coat pocket."

"William Davis was arrested Saturday evening by Deputy Sheriff Rufus Eagan, and brought to Fayetteville, to jail. He had made no effort to escape, but after the killing sought an officer to give himself into custody."

MEMORIES OF PAX


(Words of Susan Davis Dixon). Here is a photo of the barn on my great grandpa's farm. The property sits just outside Pax adjacent to the Pax Community Cemetery.

This barn and the smoke house are the only two of the original buildings left standing on the farm that are safe to walk in. One of the three houses is still there but has been vandalized. The first house that they built was up near the barn and I remember my dad taking me in it when I was small. It was a one room place that he had fond memories of. The other house on the property was also small and now is the foundation that the smokehouse sits on. When we were there in April there were still jars of pickles on the shelves and Sarah and I took pictures inside. It was really interesting. The jars were of course, covered with dust and you can only imagine the "pickling" that those pickles had. The original apple tree was there. It is huge and sits just behind the house that is still standing. One of my cousins took a cutting from it and has planted it in her yard over on Maple Fork . . an area near Pax where the Davis family also lived. In the front yard of the house near Pax, there are huge rocks that project out of the soil sideways. They're kind of flat and you can sit on them. My dad tells stories of jumping off the rocks and playing games out there with his sisters and uncle Tracy. Those rocks are still there and covered with moss and flowers. It's really kind of pretty.

This is the farm that my Grandpa French raised his Christmas trees on. Once, a guy who kept stealing these trees got caught by Grandpa French and he shot him with buckshot. It went to court but in the end they didn't charge him with anything. The thief survived; no harm, no foul. Most people there were glad the thief was taught a lesson.

The prettiest thing is the view of the barn from up the hill, from the house beyond the smokehouse. I've taken photos of it in the spring and the winter. The barn sits on a stone foundation and the floor is dirt. Dirt that's packed from years of use. There's a loft that we never could get the nerve to go into; Granny assured us it was full of rats. When we were there in April, we walked through the barn and as we came out the back, two large white tailed deer took off running through the field and down into the woods. It was a sight I will never forget. They were beautiful.
