"Tall, lean and looking mighty fit, Donald Lively leads a full life. Although he has a few aches and pains, his is thankful.
"I've had a good life. There is no question about that," he says with genuine contentment.
He mows his grass, tends the backyard garden and takes an active part in his church and a half dozen or so civic organizations.
Except for some minor surgery and cataract removals, the retired real estate salesman has enjoyed good health.
Born at Lively along the Paint Creek in Fayette County in 1909, he was the oldest son in seven children of the late George W. Lively and Anna Maria Davis Lively. One sibling died in childhood after falling from a wagon and being run over by one of the wheels.
Lively had a near miss himself at about age 4. "I got slapped by a horse," he says pointing to a noticeable indentation over his left eye. He was knocked out and his parents expected him to die.
"I think they laid me out but they could still feel a little pulse or something. They took me from down there in the country over to Beckley Hospital. The doctor patched up my head and I went to live with my grandparents, Henry L. Davis and Sarah Elizabeth Hutchinson Davis on Sand Branch Road for a couple of years."
He remembers the long walk home ever rocky terrain. "You had to walk just about everywhere in those days. I didn't want to go to school. But he attended grade school at Lively, where he remembers Martha Susan Davis Wingrove as a strict teacher, but a good one. School had its share of fun as well.
"We didn't have sleds. I remember taking this porcelain wash pan that we washed our hands in. I sat down in it and started down the big hill in the snow. I know I knocked off all the porcelain off that pan," he says, chuckling.
Childhood days started early and farm chores had to be done before children entered the classroom about 8 am.
"I would have to go out on a morning early. I remember one time after the frost came on. The cattle would lie out in the field. One morning, by Jingo, I was so cold my feet were numb. When this one cow got up I stepped into her spot to get my feet warm."
Sundays were days of worship and rest - and if you knew where to go there might be a little fun too. "After church, several of us boys would climb the Town Creek Mountain. That was a great thing to get up on top of there and look all around. You could see everywhere."
If they were lucky enough to have some small change they would spend the afternoon on a train. We would ride to Deepwater, then catch the five o'clock train coming back to Lively Station. That was a big deal then," said Lively.
In 1927 he was in the first graduating class of Pax High School. "There were only five of us graduating, two boys and three girls." Later that year he entered Dunsmore Business School in Staunton, Virginia where he studied Gregg shorthand and took typing classes. "There weren't female secretaries around then. You didn't see women working out in public much at all."
In 1929 his first job as a clerk took him to Coal Run Coal Co. in Cunard, where he met Opal Perry, whose daddy was a mine foreman. The love bug struck and the couple tied the knot July 15, 1936.
Next, Donald worked at the Fayette County tax office working under Sheriff Okey Patterson.
The Livelys built a house in Oak Hill and began rearing a family that included two daughters Elizabeth Lively Baker, a retired school teacher who now lives in Daniels, and Nancy Lee Payne, also a retired school teacher who lives in Charlotte, North Carolina.
When Patterson's term ended in 1945, Lively joined the Blackburn-Patterson Realty Co., then headquartered in Mount Hope. He had worked as a clerk there for several years when his boss asked him if he thought he could sell real estate. Not one to waffle under a challenge, Lively replied, "Well, I don't know. I guess I could give it a try."
"I didn't make a lot of money but we always had what we needed. God promises to supply all our needs, not all of our wants.," he said. Lively defines success as "being humble, trustworthy and treating your fellow man the way you would want to be treated."
Retirement didn't mean a rocking chair for either member of this dynamic family. The walls of nearly every room hold at least one or more of Opal's many landscape paintings. A crocheted tablecloth, chair cover and other pieces of handwork testify to her nimble fingers.
Lively still drives and keeps busy with several organizations that include the Oak Hill Lions Club, McDonald-Warren Masonic Lodge and Sewell Chapter 24 RAM, Loyal Order of the Moose and Sons of the Revolution. He serves as treasurer of the Mount Hope Commandary, a post he has held for about 40 years. He has a passion for reading and one corner of the couple's living room is stacked with books, a large dictionary, a zippered Bible and an autographed copy of "Rocket Boys".
Lively's down to earth philosophy gives him a balanced perspective on life. "We live here on earth for a few years, make a few tracks, cast a few shadows and then move on."
