Census: 1860, Rockingham Co., NC

It was a three hour drive there from my parent's Beech Mountain, NC place. I took my mother along and it was her maiden voyage into a genealogical hunt. We started at the Wentworth Courthouse in Rockingham County where all the historical records are supposedly kept. The clerk that I spoke with was helpful and friendly but assured me that they didn't have records from the period that I was asking about. My main quest there was to find out if my great great grandmother's name was Ann Frances or Amanda Frances Covington and to see if I could find her mother's real name (Sally Ray or Sarah Reed). Neither were attainable, so we got back in the Highlander and drove to a town called Madison where there was a genealogical room in the public library. We spent about 2 hours there digging through records and books. My mom was hooked within the first ten minutes when we came across a book entitled "Covingtons" and she recognized her great grandfather's name within a few minutes. We discovered where he was buried and then also found maps of the cemetery where his wife was buried. After our time in the library, we drove up to what used to be Leaksville which has now been combined with two other small cities into one city called Eden. It was there that we found the Church of the Epiphany and it's graveyard but couldn't find T.A. Ragland's gravemarker. That is why I wrote the letter to them when I got home and now I have their reply and their photos. We also found the Lawson Cemetery and took photos of T.A. Ragland's wife and two of their sons' graves there.
