General Notes:
Major George Christian Hutter.
"Sandusky" is the name of the house the family purchased and lived in. It survived the Civil War, even though the Battle of Lynchburg was fought nearby. It did serve as headquarters for the Union Forces under General David Hunter. It is presently located off Fort Avenue, Lynchburg, Virginia.
George Hutter was a Lieutenant in the Sixth Infantry and was present October 6, 1825 at Fort Atkinson, Council Bluffs. Commanding was Brig Gen H. Atkinson. U. S. Indian Affairs agent Benjamin O'Fallon was also there, along with the chief's, head men and warriors of the Maha Tribe for the signing of the Treaty of Fort Atkinson which promised and engaged the tribes never to sell, exchange or supply any nation or band of Indians with guns, ammunition or other implements of war.
George Hutter was unit paymaster. --------------------- Served as a Lieutenant of Vollunteers in the War of 1812. After the termination of the War of 1812, he was appointed a Lieutenant in the Regular Army; served in the Seminole War in Florida, in the Black Hawk War, and later in the Mexican War as Captain in the Sixth United States Infantry. At the close of the Mexican War he was promoted to the rank of Major and Paymaster; he was stationed at Charleston, S. C., from 1857 to 1861, and as Paymaster made the last payment before the bombardment of Fort Sumter, Ito Major Anderson's command, by permission of the Governor of South Carolina. Resigned his commission in April, 1861, refused a commission of high rank in the Confederate Army, and lived in retirement during the war, on his plantation "Sandusky," near Lynchburg, Va., where he died in 1880. He was married July 6, 1830, to Harriet James Risque (born at Fincastle, Va., November 6, 1807), daughter of James B. Risque, a distinguished lawyer of Virginia, who served through the War of 1812 as Major of a Battalion of Virginia Vollunteers, acting as General Andrew Jackson's bodyguard. The marriage took place in St. Louis, Mo., at the home of her uncle, Governor Clark, Captain George C. Hutter being then stationed at Jefferson Barracks. Governor Clark won high distinction for the part taken by him in the famous Lewis and Clark Exploring Expedition.
George married Harriet James Risque [10259] [MRIN: 3429], daughter of James Risque [10260] and Elizabeth Kennerly [10261], on 6 Jul 1830 in St. Louis, Missouri.
