Moved to Little Whitestick Creek near Mt. Tabor about 1850. Census in 1850 Raleigh Co. lists John, age 40 farmer; Mary 36; William 18; Ruth 16; Peter 13; Samuel 9; John 6; Rachel 4; Irvin 1. Briery Bottom on New River.Moved to Little Whitestick Creek near Mt. Tabor, 1850. Served with Company A, 30th Battalion known as Clarke's Sharp shooters.

There is a John Davis on the 1880 Fed. Census age 70, married to Elizabeth, age 37, with stepchildren Dennis H. and Julia A. Poff. This John and Elizabeth Davis have two children, Ida and Emmet, ages 7 and 5. They are living next door to a Saml. L. Davis and wife Seanea and children in Town, Raleigh Co., WV. This Elizabeth Poff is found on the 1870 Raleigh Census with children Dennis H. age 6 and Julia A. age 4 living next to William Shepherd and Peter Snuffer. Scott Schaffer indictes on his WorldConnect Project that Elizabeth was a Snuffer prior to her marriage to Joseph Andrew Poff in 1862.

Cause of death listed as "consumption", April 18, 1870 - Fayette County, West Virginia death records.[Peter Davis1.FTW] Official cause of death is listed as "consumption" on 4/18/1870. Her husband, John, reported her death.

Notes for ELIZABETH SNUFFER:
Lisa Honaker-Odom lists Raleigh Co. Marriages records as the source for the marriage of Elizabeth and John. She states that John was listed as age 61 widowed and son of Peter and Susan Davis, resident of Fayette County, married to Elizabeth Poff, age 34, widowed, b. Floyd Co., VA and dtr. of John and Hannah Snuffer. They were married by William H. Bailey on March 13, 1872.

After the death of Elizabeth's parents, her brother William became her legal guardian. However, William died in 1856, and she must have moved into the home of her brother Peter, who now lived in Raleigh County, WV. The Census of 1860 beaars out this fact. Two years later she marries Joseph Poff and has two children. Information furnished by Lewis Poff (1999): SOURCE: Floyd County, VA Marriage Register 3, Page 16, for marriage to Joseph Andrew Poff. She was 22.

John married Mary Ann Fox [13388] [MRIN: 4432], daughter of William Fox [4218] and Elizabeth Durham [4219], on 31 Mar 1831 in Monroe County, Virginia. (Mary Ann Fox [13388] was born in 1814 and died on 18 Apr 1870.)

John next married Elizabeth Snuffer [27353] [MRIN: 9175] on 13 Mar 1872 in Raleigh County, West Virginia. (Elizabeth Snuffer [27353] was born about 1838 in Floyd County, Virginia and died in 1919 in Raleigh County, Virginia.)
