Served as Sergeant in Captain Robert Coleman's Company, 8th Regiment, commanded by Colonel Wall, Virginia Militia, in the War of 1812. Served from September 18, 1814 to January 4, 1815.

John H. Lively began as a farmer before his military career. As a result of the War of 1812 he received a pension, moved from Virginia to Kentucky in Green County where he stayed for a time. Shortly he moved on to Hart County, Kentucky and remained there for the rest of his days.

John married Pamela Pendleton [344] [MRIN: 105] on 19 Nov 1811 in Amherst County, Virginia.

John next married Sarah "Sally" Hughes Taliaferro [345] [MRIN: 106], daughter of Francis Taliaferro [32393] and Sally Hughes [32054], on 13 Apr 1815 in Albemarle County, Virginia. (Sarah "Sally" Hughes Taliaferro [345] died in 1838.)

John next married Frances S. Dodson [346] [MRIN: 107] on 7 Apr 1839.
