Attended Public school in Fayette County, West Virginia and eventually was employed by the Long Branch Coal Company at Paint Creek. He joined the U. S, Navy in WWI, achieved the rank of Warrant Officer while seeing destroyer duty. Attended business college at New River State, Montgomery, West Virginia and found employment upon graduation with Massey, Wood and West who were fuel and building suppliers in Richmond Virginia.
