General Notes:
Excerpt from the Beckley Herald Centennial Edition, August 1950.
"The forefathers of the many Raleigh County Meadows were truly Mountain Men, some of them being west of the Alleghany Mountains ridges for closer to two hundred years than one hundred. The first known to own land in what is now Raleigh County was William Meadows Sr. He signed his name "Meddows, as did the first Jeremiah Meadows living in Raleigh, according to the clerk of early Greenbrier County in 1796 and Giles County, Virginia in 1818. This is noted as to not confuse these Meadows with a Jeremiah Meadows or Meador who came to this region in 1832.
William Meddows Sr. was deeded land in the amount of 150 acres below the mouth of Madam's Creek on 28 April 1818 from the survey of June 1795 and again in 1815, which was granted Alexander Stuart and Archibald Stuart. This land contained half the briery bottom along New River and was bordered on the survey line of the corner of Peter Davis, who married Susanna Meadows January 7, 1799 in Greenbrier County.
William Sr. and Sarah, his wife, of Giles County, deeded this land to John Meadows and Elizabeth in about 1826, and they in turn deed the land to Jeremiah by 1836. Here he lived with his wife, Nancy Roach until 1843 when he died."
William married Sarah Davis [15269] [MRIN: 5041] about 1780. (Sarah Davis [15269] was born about 1761.)
