George Pierce LIVELY 1844 - 1927
Corporal George Pierce LIVELY Son of Rev. Mark LIVELY and Jane BOYD, was born on 30 June 1844 (one source says 29 June) in the 66th District of Burke County, Georgia. He had two brothers and one sister - an older brother, Green B. (b. 1838); an older sister, Sarah Emily. (b. 1841); and a younger brother, Benjamin (b. 1848).
He enlisted in Company C, 5th Georgia Cavalry, at Camp Berrien, Georgia, on March 3, 1863. Captain Marsh enlisted him in as a Private, but by the end of 1863 he obtained the rank of Corporal.
He was home at Shell Bluff Community, Burke County, Georgia, during September, 1863, but returned to the regiment in time to take part in the Atlanta and Carolina Campaigns of 1864 - 1865. He is listed on a Muster Roll of Officers and Men surrendered on April 26, 1865. Corporal Lively was paroled at Hillsboro, North Carolina, May 3, 1865.
On 2 Apr 1867, George married Miss Claranella Adelaide "Kelly Bly" POWELL, daughter of Rev. Lafayette POWELL.
George, the son of a licensed Methodist preacher made the decision to join Botsford Baptist Church where his wife attended. Nine sons and three daughters were born of their marriage. George was a southern gentleman and a planter. He held the office of Sunday School superintendent and deacon of Botsford Baptist Church for more than 50 years and attended regularly up to the time of his death. Representing his church, he served as a messenger to the Georgia Baptist Hephzibah Association in 1887, 1891, 1897, 1899, 1901, 1903, 1906, 1907, 1913, and 1917.
In 1907 - 08, George represented Burke County in the Georgia Legislature. The main purpose of this mission to the legislature was to pass the state prohibition law, which was passed during his tenure. Thus, he helped pass the Georgia Prohibition Law long before National Prohibition.
On 30 Dec 1916, George's wife, Claranella, died and was buried at Botsford Baptist Cemetery, Burke County, Georgia.
He died after a prolonged illness on 20 Aug 1927 at the age of 83. His funeral service was held at Botsford Baptist Church on 21 Aug 1927 on a Sunday afternoon with Rev. W. S. HINESLEY of Woodlawn Baptist Church of Augusta, Georgia, officiating. He rests at Botsford with his wife and six of his children. --------- George Pierce Lively, 83, who died August 20, at his home here at 1690 Jenkins street following a prolonged illness, was born in Burke County, June 30, 1844. He was the second son of Rev. Mark and Jane Boyd Lively. With the exception of the past four years, spent in Augusta with his daughter, Mrs. J. H. Bateman, Mr. Lively spent his entire life at the place of his birth.
At the age of 17, Mr. Lively enlisted in the Confederate army, serving with Porter's Volunteers and Wheeler's cavalry. He served with the latter until the fall of the Confederacy. In 1866 he married Miss Claranelle A. Powell, daughter of Rev. LaFayette Powell. To this union was horn nine sons and three daughters.
Uniting with Botsford Baptist church?the second oldest Baptist church in the state -? he held the office of Sunday school superintendent and deacon of this church for more than fifty years; he was a regular attendant up to the time of his death.
WAS MEMBER OF STATE LEGISLATURE Mr. Lively represented Burke county in the Georgia legislature in 1907?08. it was at that time that the state prohibition law was passed.
Surviving Mr. Lively are eight sons, Judge J. M. Lively, B. . F. Lively, Rev. J. B. Lively and H. W. Lively, all of Augusta, C. B. Lively and J. T. Lively, of Waynesboro: L. S. Lively of Vidalia: G. P. Lively of Savannah; one daughter, Mrs. J. H. Bateman, of Augusta; twenty-five grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren survive.
The following grandsons were active pallbearers. Warren Lively, Lewis Lively, Ashton Lively, Mercer Lively, Eulls Lively and Milner Lively. The honorary pallbearers were, Judge William H. Davis, Joe Law, Frank Burney, Walter Green, John McElmurray, Charlie Gray, Hugh Blount. Percy Boyd, Hamp Blount, J. H. Fullbrlght, and Hosey Blount, all of Waynesboro; A. Martin, of Telfairville.
The funeral services were held at Botsford Baptist church Sunday afternoon, August 21st: Rev. W. S. Hinesley of Woodlawn Baptist, officiating. A flower-banked mound marks his last resting place: his memory is cherished by all who knew him. There was great rejoicing around the great white throne when this I dear old white-haired saint was gathered home.
