He was a Baptist preacher and was born in what was known variously as "Culbertson's Fort", "Farley's Fort" and "Ellison's Fort" at Crump's Bottom. He was ordained in 1808. All four sons were Baptist ministers, and it is said that the five of them founded as many as two hundred Baptist churches in WV, KY, OH, IN, and IL.

In 1800, he joined the Indian Creek Baptist Church in Monroe County, now WV. In 1808, he was ordained to the gospel ministry and subsequently moved to the Coal Marshes in what is now Raleigh County. The father of 12 children, he died in the spring of 1834.
