Enlisted in the Confederate Army May 5, 1862, a private in Company F, 11th Battalion, Louisiana Infantry. He was captured at Vicksburg, escaped by swimming the Mississippi River. He was able to hide and finally made his way to Harrisonburg.
William married Lessie Lourania Valentine [3673] [MRIN: 1301], daughter of Levi Valentine [3674] and Caroline Zeigler [3675], on 15 Jan 1856 in Catahoula Parish, Louisiana. (Lessie Lourania Valentine [3673] was born on 11 Nov 1838 in Holum, Louisiana and died on 30 Nov 1890 in Holum, Louisiana.)
