bullet  General Notes:

Samuel Edgar Lively, Jr. used the name Lewis Lively for nearly his entire life. The family story has it that Samuel did not like the name he was going by in the first grade (Edgar), and told the teacher at the time that his real name was Lewis. The school accepted the name change and he used Lewis as his name until reaching senior citizen age and had applied for benefits from the Social Security Administration. At that time he was required to file an amended birth certificate (an affidavit) complete with the signatures of still living members of his immediate family.

Lewis' working career was spent as a heavy equipment operator in highway construction, having worked on such projects as the toll plaza approaching the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge and the freeway over the Altamont pass into Oakland during its original construction. His military career was in World War II with the U. S. 10th Army, 77th Infantry Division during the Okinawa and Ie Shima campaigns in the Pacific Theater which is described in the following:

10th U. S. Army, 77th Infantry Division at Okinawa and Ie Shima, World War II---------------------------------------

Lewis Lively served as a Tech Sergeant with the 77th Infantry Division. His combat career began as a follow-up (second or third wave) at the invasion of Okinawa on April 1, 1945, and then as a member of the primary invasion force on Ie Shima in mid-April. Following the Ie Shima event he was a part of the 77th Division sent back to Okinawa to assist the Marines in the final weeks of the Okinawa campaign.
