Edward Hubbard Bailey [5198]
- Born: 28 Feb 1838, Kohala, Hawaii
- Marriage: Emily Kania [5199] in 1858
- Died: 5 Nov 1910, Wailuku, Maui, Hawaii at age 72
General Notes:
Edward Bailey was the son of missionaries, Edward and Caroline Hubbard Bailey. Edward Jr. was born ar Kohala, Hawaii. Written records show Edward's birthdate as 1838, however his death certificate says he was 73 years nine months of age when he died November 15, 1910. He married a native Hawaiian, Emily Kane Kania. They had three children, William K. Baily, Ella Aulani (Rhodes) and Mary Kaulaloa (Wilson). Edward Jr. Lived his entire life in Hawaii. As an adult he entered into various business ventures with his father. His death certificate lists his occupation as landowner. Edward and Emily made their home and raised their family in Wailuku Maui on Vineyard Street. He was Protestant.
Edward Bailey's will leaves all his property to his wife, Emily. After her death, he declared that the land should be divided accordingly: 1. To son William K. property known as the Bailey Block at Main and High Street, and land at the south side of Vineyard Street. 2. To daughter Ella, land between Main and Vineyard Street known as Malaihe land and land known as Kaumu land. 3. To grandson Joseph Bailey Wilson, land on Vineyard (Edward Bailey's personal residence). 4. To daughter Mary Bailey, property on the east side of High Street lying between the Bailey Block and the Kaumu land.
Kauma is also referred to as the WE Bal homestead. This link between Bal and Kaunu land being one and the same gives more reason to believe that this is land owned at one time by Meeau's father, Kaunu, referred to as Kaunu in the will. Legand tells us that Kaunu had two children who survived childhood, Meeau and Kekaa. We know Kekaa died considerably before Meeau, so it is likely that the property was left to one of Meeau's descendents which would be William E. Bal.
A legal document dated June 14, 1917 shows a cash value of Edward Bailey Jr's estate at $21,344.45, a tidy sum in those days. His primary heirs were his wife, three children, Joseph B. Wilson, a grandson, and Pauline Bailey, a child brought up from babyhood by Edward and Emily Bailey. His will shows Pauline as the child of Annie Minor. As a child growing up in Hawaii, I recall Pauline Bailey (Swift).
My father, John Ailau Bal remembered his grandfather, on horseback, at a ranch in Makawao where he remembered that his grandfather had only one hand but still could ride and round up cattle as if he had both hands. Edward Jr. was the only son of Edward and Caroline Hubbard's to remain in Hawaii. Edward Jr's other brothers moved to California and settled in the Oakland, Palo Alto, and Los Angeles areas.
A Maui News article states that Edward Jr was buried at the old Wailuku Cemetery at the top of Vineyard. I have visited that cemetery several times. It is evident that there are two plots, unmarked, in front of my grandmother's grave. I assume those are the final resting place of my great grandparents.
Edward married Emily Kania [5199] [MRIN: 1808] in 1858. (Emily Kania [5199] died on 15 Mar 1915 in Wailuku, Maui, Hawaii.)
