Lewis P. Lively is a representative of an old Virginia family. His grandfather, Mark Lively, was a native of the Old Dominion, as was his father, John H. Lively, who was born in 1792. John H. began as a farmer when a young man. During the War of 1812 he served in the U. S. Army as Captain of a company on the Virginia coast and as a consideration for his services, he received a pension from the government during the latter portion of his life. From Virginia he moved to Kentucky where he located in Green County, remained a short time then moved to Todd County, and at last settled in Hart County, where he died in 1853. He was a leading church man and was also noted for his charitable proclivities. He was married in 1817 to Miss Sallie Talliaferro, a daughter of Frank Talliaferro of Albemarle County, Virginia. Mrs. Lively was a devoted Christian and died in 1838.

Lewis P. Lively, the subject of this sketch, is the oldest of three children born to John H. and Sarah Lively. His birth occurred October 4, 1819 in Green County, Kentucky. His early training and education was above the ordinary schooling afforded the youth of his day, and he began the study of theology, although following pursuits for a livelihood. In 1844 he was ordained as a minister, at the Methodist conference which was held at Memphis, Tennessee. In 1846 he moved to Arkansas where he remained
seventeen years, propounding the Gospel and teachings of Christ. In 1864 he came to Texas and was first located in Smith County, and in 1872 he settled in Kaufman County and retired from active ministerial work. He bought a farm and has since devoted his time and attention principally to farming. For a period of forty years Mr. Lively officiated as an itinerant minister. For twenty eight years he served in the capacity of a presiding elder. Probably no man has ever possessed a more charitable disposition and kind heart than he. He has always held out a hand to the poor and needy and from his purse he has dispersed liberally for the wants of those in dire distress; and today he can look back with a deal of satisfaction upon a life well spent in the service if his maker.

His wife, who bore the maiden name of Amanda Erwin, is the daughter of Rev. James Erwin of Tennessee who was also a minister of the Gospel, belonging to the Methodist Episcopal denomination. Mrs. Lively has been a very earnest worker and Christian help to her husband in the performance of his pastoral work and deeds of charity so abundant in a minister's career. They were married October 27, 1847 and have a family of four children whose names are J. W., Robert M., Mary E., and Lewis P. J. W. is a physician and minister of the Methodist Episcopal located at Marshall, Texas. Robert M. is an attorney located in Canton, Texas. Mary E. is the wife of Vernon V. T. McChesney, attorney at Will's Point, Texas and Lewis P. is now studying law.

Mr. Lively now owns a farm of 600 acres, about 250 of which are in fine state of cultivation.
