Cottrell Lively is buried in the Lively Cemetery, Orchard, Monroe County, West Virginia. Migrated from Albemarle County, Virginia in 1785, to settle on Brush Creek near Orchard, Monroe County, West Virginia. Enlisted in the military in 1780 and served 2 years as a private in the infantry/cavalry under Captains West, Luke, and Barrett, Virginia Regiment of the Continental Line commanded by Colonel Armand. Cottrell received a land bounty warrant of 200 acres and was granted a pension in Monroe County, Virginia. There are various spellings of his name, ie; Godrill, Goodwill, Godesel, Cotel, Cartel. (File Numbers - Pension Bureau, War Department, Washington D.C. @ 34101,R.6389 and B.L. Warrant 4973).

Pension role of Virginia 1835: Godrell Lively - Monroe County. Private, Cavalry, Armond's Legion, $98.32 annual allowance. $294.96 received 11.6.1833. Pension started age 71.
