Migrated from Albemarle County, Virginia in 1785, to settle on Brush Creek near Orchard, Monroe County, West Virginia. Enlisted in the military in 1780 and served 2 years as a private in the infantry/cavalry under Captains West, Luke, and Barrett, Virginia Regiment of the Continental Line commanded by Colonel Armand. Cottrell received a land bounty warrant of 200 acres and was granted a pension in Monroe County, Virginia. There are various spellings of his name, ie; Godrill, Goodwill, Godesel, Cotel, Cartel.
