SISTER TERESA LOUISE MONNOT
Coming from a family of ten children, Lorena was the fourth child of Louis Monnot and Mary Hatfield. Her mother was from a staunch Methodist family. Influenced by the deep faith of her husband, she converted to Catholicism, and all who knew her, loved and respected her as a wonderful catholic wife and mother.
Sister Teresa Louise was born south of Tucumcari, New Mexico on home- stead land on August 11, 1907. Later the family moved to Bakersfield and then Blythe, California, where her father, a farmer, grew cotton, a needed commodity in World War I. Mr. Monnot was also a skilled carpenter so eventually the family went to Inglewood as business was booming in nearby Los Angeles.
When Catholic Girls' High School, later Bishop Conaty High School, opened in 1923, Sister enrolled as a sophomore. After graduation in 1926, she worked for a few years in Inglewood in office and banking employment.
In 1928 she entered the Sisters of St. Joseph. The morning she entered, one of her aunts told her daughter Marion that, "Lorena would be coming over after Mass for her last breakfast in the world."
Following her novitiate days Sister went to live at the Academy of Our Lady of Peace in San Diego and taught at St. John School. Her teaching was mainly in the areas of San Diego, Los Angeles and San Francisco. While at Star of the Sea School, she came to Los Angeles in 1938 and with Sister Rosaleen dressed her cousin Sister Margaret Callahan in the habit.
Sister Teresa Louise loved to teach and she loved children. In practical ways she was able to reach her students with patience and a great talent for humor. One of her favorite lines which so many remembered was, “God is god….God is fair….He gave some… brains.. and others….hair." In her retirement years at the Center, boys and girls would come to visit the sisters, as they often do. One of the boys asked if they could please see the sister who told funny stories. Many of her pupils let her know of their gratitude.
She had a special knack for arts and crafts as well as for cooking and sewing. When time allowed, she would try to enroll in adult classes in nearby schools. In later years she was at St. Mary Hospital in Tucson and Daniel Freeman Hospital where she worked in pastoral care.
Sister Teresa Louise was fond of her family. When her sister Gertrude was widowed, Sister assumed the role of matchmaker. She surveyed the possibilities and shortly introduced Sister Juanita Mary's father to her sister. Under the watchful eye of the matchmaker, they courted and were married. The reception was in the convent.
As her health declined, her duties became lighter and she moved to Carondelet Center. There she was happy to partake in the prayerful ministry of the sisters as well as the programs and entertainment. Reading was no longer possible to sister, but she was content to listen and to pray.
On Wednesday, March 12, she fell, injuring herself. She was taken to Daniel Freeman Memorial Hospital. While waiting in the ER, one of the nurses asked a sister about a Mary and Mother about whom Sister Teresa Louise had been speaking. The following morning before surgery, she peacefully entered eternal life. At the time of her fall, she was heard to say, "God is good." May these words at the end of her long life be a beautiful reminder to each of us. May her dear soul rest in peace.
