"Sandusky" is the name of the house the family purchased and lived in. It survived the Civil War, even though the Battle of Lynchburg was fought nearby. It did serve as headquarters for the Union Forces under General David Hunter, a former West Point classmate of Major George Hutter.* It is presently located off Fort Avenue, Lynchburg, Virginia.
George Hutter was a Lieutenant in the Sixth Infantry and was present October 6, 1825 at Fort Atkinson, Council Bluffs. Commanding was Brig Gen H. Atkinson. U. S. Indian Affairs agent Benjamin O'Fallon was also there, along with the chief's, head men and warriors of the Maha Tribe for the signing of the Treaty of Fort Atkinson which promised and engaged the tribes never to sell, exchange or supply any nation or band of Indians with guns, ammunition or other implements of war.
George Hutter was unit paymaster.

University of Virginia and VMI class of 1860. Was a farmer and surveyor.
More: Graduated from VMI in July 1860 and made a brilliant record as a Confederate officer in the Civil War, in which he rose to the rank of Colonel. He was wounded and captured at Pickett's celebrated charge in the battle for Gettysburg, and after his exchange he was recaptured and served as a prisoner of war until the end of the conflict.
After his graduation from VMI he was a student of medicine at Charleston, South Carolina from September 1860 until February 1861, where his father was stationed as paymaster in the U. S. Army.
