General Notes: Paymaster for the Confederate States of America. Lived at Igloo Farms.
Excerpt from The Street of Lynchburg by Martha Cleveland Craddock; "Six blocks west of Chestnut Hill Drive and Sandusky Drive, running northwest, and Igloo Drive, running west. Sandusky, built by Charles Johnston in 1808, is Lynchburg's first example of a Federal style facade. Igloo Drive was named for the aforementioned dairy farm. Igloo was named by Ferdinand Hutter, son of Major George Hutter at the suggestion of a friend, who had traveled to Alaska and brought back this word signifying Little Hut used by the Indians there to indicate their abodes. It seems to imply that the original house was small, although the building replacing it is a handsome brick structure. Charles B. Segar established the Igloo Dairy Farm in 1922 with a herd of a hundred Guernsey cattle . . ."
Ferdinand C. Hutter attended West Point 1848-1851 without graduating. SRC: West Point Library and National Archives Record Group 94.

General Notes: Major Edward Sixtus Hutter.
Rivermont was the home purchased by Edward and Nannie Hutter later in the 19th century. While they did alter the house, they did a great deal with the land in the neighborhood above and beyond Daniel's Hill. In 1873, Hutter, a civil engineer, parceled and sold lots above the mansion in a development he named Danieltown. He was later one of the organizers of the Rivermont Company, the largest of the several land companies of the 1890's boom, and he was in part responsible for engineering the bridge over Blackwater Creek, which was so essential; to the development of what then was farmland.
Major Edward Sixtus Hutter II: Virginia Military Institute class of 1859. Saw service April 17, 1861 as Captain of a company of cadets who became involved in combat. Surrendered at Danville on April 27, 1865 as Major of Artillery. Later, his occupation was Civil Engineer. Residence; Rivermont.
Newspaper article in Ragland possession (2004):
"Among the most prized possessions of Attorney H.M. Gibbes is a volume that once formed part of the law library of the Confederacy and which has a most romantic and interesting history.
The volume is a copy of Vattel's Law of Nations: as edited by the great jurist Joseph Chitty and the copy in the possession of the local attorney is in most excellent preservation. It bears the incription, probably written by Judah P. Benjamin, "Confederate States, Department of State,: and was saved from the general desctruction of the secret archives of the Confederacy by Major E.S. Hutter who was Mr. Gibbes' father in law.
The circumstances were as follows: When the Confederate government withdrew from Richmond following the rumors, (then unconfirmed), of the surrender at Appomattox, the secret archives and a large portion of the law library and other appurtenances of the department of state were sent to Danville, Virginia, where Major Hutter was in charge and there stored in the government warehouses. As soon as the rumor of the final surrender was partially verified, Major Hutter received orders to destroy all the archives and, there being imminent danger of an immediate Federal attack, he went at night with a small force of faithful soldiers, poured kerosene oil over the entire contents of the storehousees and complied to the letter with his orders to destroy everything that might embarrass the friends of the Confederacy in both America and Europe. It is said that this act of Major Hutter's was one of the most vital of the dying days of the war of secession as it completely prevented disclosures that might have caused international complications of treamendous magnitude.
While opening the cases of books and papers that the fire might do its work without possibility of failure, Major Hutter came across the volume of international law and kept it as being one of the last relics of the defeated ambitions of the south. Later, it came into the possession of Mr. Gibbes after his marriage to Major Hutter's daughter and as stated, it forms one of the treasures of his law library second only in importance to a copy of the statutes of South Carolina published in 1836 and which contains many a long list of the old families which settled the "South State" in the latter end of the Seventeenth century. The Gibbes family was among the earliest of these settlers and, for generations was prominent in the affairs of the colony.
Major Hutter was identified with the armies of the Confederacy from the very beginning, he having been ordered to attend the execution of John Brown after the raid at Harper's Ferry and being at that time captain of one of the cadet compaines of the University of Virginia. On the day of the execution he attended as aide to Stonewall Jackson. Thus it may fairly be said that he was present at both the opening and the closing acts of the history of the southern states. He was in command at Danville after the surrender in 1865 and it will be remembered that the president and cabinet officers of the Confederacy were compelled to retreat through that place as the only road then open to the south was through the Virginia city."

General Notes: Adelaide (Adeline) was the youngest child in the family, therefore was the only one living at Sandusky during the occupation by Federal Forces on June 17, 1864. She kept a journal during that period of which only a small portion survived. The remnants are housed in the Poplar Forest Library for safekeeping. Ada described the devastated condition of the fields and outbuildings at Sandusky as well as at Hunter's Hill, the summer home of her grandfather, Major James Beverly Risque; contrasting those to the relatively undamaged fields and buildings at Poplar Forest, where she visited during those troubled times.
After the war she moved to Morganfield, Kentucky with her new husband where she bore seven children, two of which lay buried in the Narcissus Field, the family graveyard. They moved back to Virginia where LeRoy's health deteriorated until his death in 1900.
Adeline married Leroy William Long [10268] [MRIN: 3437] on 8 Dec 1866 in Sandusky, Campbell County, Virginia. Leroy was born on 8 Jul 1831 in Campbell County, Virginia and died on 11 Jun 1900 in Nottoway County, Virginia at age 68.
General Notes: Major LeRoy William Long. LeRoy William Long was the son of Calista Rosser Cralle and Armistead Long II, born on the Falling River in Campbell County, Virginia. When he was still a young child, his parents, along with his aunt and uncle, Maria Kenner Cralle and Albert Gallatin Long emigrated to Union County, Kentucky with a total of 15 children in 17 wagons and carriages containing all their worldly possessions. (The Long brothers had married two Cralle sisters.) Calista wrote a journal each day of the journey, which began on December 6, 1836 through ice and snow, over the Blue Ridge and Allegheny Mountains, until they reached their destination on January 13, 1837. After the death of his mother in 1841, his father moved his family back to Amherst County, Virginia where he arranged for the education of his sons. LeRoy studied law at what is today the University of Richmond and returned to Kentucky to practice law.
When the Civil War broke out, LeRoy joined the Confederate Army and served until he was captured in Kentucky while trying to raise a Confederate company in that border state. Major Long was imprisoned at Johnston's Island, at Sandusky, Ohio, where he remained under a sentence of death until he was pardoned by President Lincoln. It was at Johnston's Island where he met Colonel J. Risque Hutter who had also been captured. When they were both paroled they returned to Lynchburg where the destitute LeRoy spent the summer trying to earn enough to get back to Kentucky. It was during this time that he met and fell in love with Risque's sister, Ada, and before he left for his adopted home in Kentucky, they were engaged. After resuming his law practice, he returned to Virginia and they were married at Sandusky on December 6, 1866.

General Notes: Known as "Hallie" and was unmarried for many reasons. Though she had no husband nor children of her own, she left a lifetime of good works for which there are still a few who remember her with fondness and gratitude. She was the youngest living child of Ada and LeRoy Long and perhaps had a greater impact on the lives of more people than all of the rest of us put together. She was born to be a "helper of people" and she did touch many lives. Her first role was to members of her own family. She and her beloved mother, Ada, undertook the rearing of two of Anne Cralle Long Johnson's children when she moved to Florida following the death of her husband. The youngest of the two, little Roy, was less than a year old when his mother left. He called Ada "mother" for the rest of his life and Hallie was the only real parent he ever knew other than his beloved Ada. When he was a small child they learned that he was profoundly deaf as a result of spinal meningitis and required special care which they provided.
Anne Lee Johnson (Payne) considered Hallie her second mother, as did her son West. Mary Ball Long lost her father at age six and her mother Em died some seven years later of cancer. Hallie became a second mother to her, helping her through St. Margaret's School and Randolph Macon Woman's College while providing her with a home until her marriage in 1940. When young Roy reached school age, Hallie's brother John, who was studying law at the University of Pennsylvania, learned of a very fine school for the deaf and made arrangements for Roy to attend. Hallie went up to Philadelphia to serve as a counselor in the School so she could be near Roy and help him to adjust to being so far from home. After a year there, she was forced to return home to help care for her eldest brother George who had a nervous breakdown following a serious accident on the railroad.
For the next several years, Hallie worked as a teacher at the Miller Orphanage while her mother Ada took George to Sandusky to recover. She the accepted a position as executive secretary of the Traveler's Aid Society where her role was that of helping people from all walks of life. She opened her home to all who needed a helping hand beyond the scope of the Traveler's Aid. Her last adopted child was Eveline, daughter of devoted but severely handicapped parents. Aunt Hal provided for all her needs that her parents were not able to do, and when the time came, she sent her great neice to four years at Mary Washington College. She dedicated her life to the travelers, the poor, and to those of her loved ones who were, for one reason or another, in need of a helping hand. (Notes found at Sandusky)

General Notes: MARRIED AT ST. PAUL'S
Miss Lucy Boyd Hutter Becomes the
Bride of Mr. T. Rush Ragland
One of the most interesting marriages that has been chronicled in Lynchburg in recent years was that of Miss Lucy Boyd Hutter, daughter of Major Edward S. Hutter, and Mr. T. Rush Ragland, of Kanawha, WV, which took place yesterday afternoon at half past twelve o'clock at St. Paul's Episcopal Church. The auditorium had been arranged for the occasion in a most attractive manner, the chancel being elaborately decorated with palms, ferns, and flowers. The day was bright, beautiful, and propitious, and every circumstance of the happy event seemed to promise a joyous future for the young couple. The popularity of the bride in Lynchburg was attested by an immense assemblage which not only filled every seat, but taxed the capacity of standing room. In the soft and pleasant illumination that fell through the great stained glass windows, the interior of the church looked like a delicate picture, the features of which were exquisite taste and refinement.
Promptly at the hour named, the notes from the great organ, presided over by Mr. Hartley Turner, announced the approach of the bridal party. The full vested choir, of which Miss Hutter has been a devoted member, entered from the vestry room and marched to their seats in the chancel, singing that expressive song, “O Perfect Love.” Miss Mary Christian then entered from the vestry room and was followed by the bridesmaids, Miss Elizabeth Lewis, Miss Nina Armistead, Miss Mazie Hutter, Miss Norvie Craighill, Miss Ruby Hanmer, Miss Fannie Cheatwood, and Miss Evelyn Early, of Lynchburg. They advanced along the central aisle to the main entrance, where they received the other members of the wedding party.
Six ushers, Messrs. George Lancaster, G.O. Howard, and Forest Scales, of Holcombe Rock, and C.S. Hutter, D.A. Payne, and Dexter Otey, of Lynchburg, then led the way to the altar, the choir meanwhile singing the bridal chorus from “Lohengrin.” The ushers were followed by eight groomsmen, walking in couples, as follows: Messers. E.R. Hutter, R.T. Watts, Samuel Adams, R.C. Blackford, Keene Langhorne and Henry Johnson, of Lynchburg: Robert Rose, of New York, and Colonel Joseph Button, of Richmond. On reaching the chancel, forming an appropriate background for the handsome gowns of the young laides. The groomsmen were followed by the seven bridesmaids, who were exquisitely gowned in white mousse (unintelligible) and lace trimmings over taffeta with large white picture hats and long gloves, and carried bunches of maiden hair fern. Miss Mary Christian, who came next in the march to the altar wore a charming creation of white mousseline with rare lace trimming. Miss Christian was followed by the two maids of honor, Miss Edna Hutter, sister of the bride, and Miss Florence Langhorne, of Campbell County, who were handsomely and becomingly gowned in white mousseline over white taffeta and wore large white chiffon hats with pink roses and carried la France roses.
The bride followed the maids of honor, and proceeded up the aisle on the arm of her father. She wore an elegant and lovely bridal costume of heavy white satin with shite chiffon over dress and point lace, with a long veil caught with a cluster of dainty orange blossoms, and carried a bunch of graceful Easter lilies. On reaching the foot of the chancel steps, the bride was joined by the groom, who had approached from the vestry room accompanied by his best man, Mr. Marion Scales, of New York.
During the interesting ceremony, an appropriate selection was softly rendered on the organ, and at its conclusion, to the notes of mendelssohn's wedding march, the bridal party passed down the central aisle preceded by the bride and groom. From the church the party repaired to the home of the bride's parents on Daniel's Hill, where an elaborate bridal breakfast was served. The gracious hospitality never presented a fairer appearance. The young couple received the guests in the large hall, and later the company adjourned to the spacious drawing rooms, where the breakfast tables were spread. The bridal party was seated at a large circular table, exquisitely decorated with Easter lilies and garlands of smilax. The name cards were especially dainty - each one being a hand - painted orchid. Many candles in silver candelabra shed their light on the beautiful scene, and after a delicious menu had been served, the bride's cake was cut amid much mirth and eagerness. Later the bridesmaids formed a circle around the bride, in the pretty german fashion, waiting to catch the flower from the bridal bouquet, which the bride tossed blindfold. The recipient will be the next bride.
At 4 o'clock yesterday afternoon, Mr. and Mrs. Ragland boarded the westbound Chesapeake and Ohio train for their future home in Kanawha.
